The Kumeyaay People and homeland exists on two sides of the U.S. / Mexican Border. Native Like Water’s InterTribal Youth Programs takes time to gather with teenage youth of the Baja, Mexico Kumiai side. Offering volunteer opportunity to our NLW Alum from the U.S. side to assist in the healing of this longstanding binational relationship, before there was a border. We have more than 15 years working on the regenerational movement along a borderless land.

La Puerta would like to thank Native Like Water’s Inter-tribal Youth Program, and Casa Tres Corazones for their generous contribution and for helping to make this important project possible.

Below are sum positive images of the Kumiai family in modern Indigenous time. Taken at the 2023 Gathering along the Kumiai Coast.

There was a time when a tribe of Indigenous people gathered on the Kumiai Coast (now commonly known as Baja California) to practice an art passed down through the generations before theirs. Today, gathering the Kumiai family together on the same beach to honor their ancestors and celebrate their cultural heritage is a bit more complicated.
